KUALA LUMPUR — In an era dominated by hyper-accelerated feeds and synthetic imagery, a quiet, powerful resistance is unfolding at the KL City Art Gallery, located at No. 8, Level G4, Block C4 in Publika Shopping Gallery, Solaris Dutamas. The gallery has officially unveiled ‘Masters of Reality’, a landmark art exhibition running through September 19, 2026, offering completely free entry for all visitors to celebrate the nation’s 69th Merdeka and Hari Malaysia.

Bringing together 52 masterworks by 16 of Malaysia’s most esteemed senior realist artists, the show stands as both a tribute to the nation’s heritage and a bold declaration of the irreplaceable value of the human spirit. Designed as a therapeutic counterweight to our fast-paced “age of anxiety,” the exhibition invites visitors to slow down, step off the digital wheel, and embrace the deliberate act of truly looking.
At the center of this movement is Maizon Omar, Director and Curator of KL City Art Gallery, who warns that our constant engagement with technology threatens our ability to meaningfully engage with the world.
“The human gaze is now very threatened by all this fast scrolling, fast imaging and whatnot… we don’t pay any particular attention to anything,” Maizon Omar observes. Addressing the rise of advanced robotic art tools like Ai-Da, Maizon Omar clarifies that the show is a call to mindfulness rather than a rejection of modern progress.
“This is not a revolt against technology. We are not resisting technology. But we’re saying, ‘Hey, stop for a while and don’t forget our humanity.’ Don’t let technology or AI take over even our feelings, our senses, our way of seeing,” Maizon Omar emphasizes, noting that a human artwork carries a unique spirit forged through thousands of moments of dedicated observation.
This painstaking dedication is echoed by featured artist Dr. Zakaria Ali, whose oil paintings capture intimate scenes of his wife, family, and local community. Reflecting on the slow, deliberate process required to create authentic art,
Dr. Zakaria Ali explains, “When you paint with oils, you work in layers. You complete one layer and then you have to wait for it to dry… Layer after layer after layer. That process requires a lot of time.” In discussing the challenge posed by artificial intelligence, Dr. Zakaria Ali notes, “AI can create so many images… But you are human. AI is not human. As artists, we have to find our own ways of ensuring that our works cannot simply be imitated by AI… The important thing is for people to be able to relate to our artwork as something that is human-made, rather than machine-made”.
Highlighting the broader cultural and economic impact of the exhibition, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER), framed the show as a vital contribution to the nation’s cultural wealth.
“I feel very proud that there are individuals and organisations willing to organise an exhibition like this,” Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob states.
“Paintings and artworks represent a form of national wealth. They are intellectual assets and intellectual wealth, and over time, their value can continue to appreciate.” Urging society to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the creative arts, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob adds, “We do not live merely to fulfil our basic necessities… We also want to appreciate the higher values of life. Art, culture and our creative works must be encouraged”.

Anchored by Maizon Omar’s vision and enriched by multidisciplinary cultural programs, this free-admission showcase at Publika Shopping Gallery ultimately offers a peaceful sanctuary, inviting everyone to reconnect with authentic human experience.
